We are headed up to Gilbert, MN at the end of Summer for 3 days of wheeling at the Iron Range. There are 1,200 acres of wheeling in all sorts of terrain and skill levels . This area was mined until 1981 and contains iron ore pits, ore stockpiles and tailings basins – you will come back red and you’ll be stained red for years ( a right of passage for all Iron Range conquerors)

There is different types of camping available at the Sherwood Forest campground, which does have a it’s own trail access’s to the OHV park. We were also recommended to the Kotes Motel 10 minutes away in Eveleth, MN. The campground fills up fast so if that’s what you choose, do so quickly.

A Minnesota OHV pass is required $21 for a One Year, $31 for a Three Year.

The plan is to take on the Mesabi Mountain Trail on Friday and the OHV area Saturday and Sunday.

We are highly recommending a minimum of 33″ tires, a lift, and some off-road experience to join us on Mesabi – stock vehicles will scrap and possibly need recovering. This is 4 miles in, 4 miles out with very little turn around areas. It is non-stop, relentless off-roading – rocks, tight turns, hill climbs, descents, rocks and more rocks. Usually, this is an all day trip, averaging 5-8 hours depending on the group size and experience. Lunch will be on the trail at the end point before turning around to head back out.

If you want to take on Mesabi, plan to be there Thursday before mid-afternoon so you can get your trail pass and set up. We will meet early Friday morning. Anyone who will join us Saturday and Sunday, arrive Friday by mid-afternoon to pick up your passes. Feel free to also check out the OHV area.

The OHV has several different terrains, play areas, experience levels. Overall, the scenery is worth half the trip – you’ll encounter some beautiful views through trees, rock tailings, overlooking the Minnesota scenery, through some watery areas, and in mined crevices. It is iron ore so again, you’ll have red staining on your rig. Following the trail rides, vehicle washes are required at their wash area just outside the entrance.
